Being Ethical With Your Magic - The Key To A Magicians Success

The topic of Ethics in magic is a very subjective one, but there are, I believe, some very clear-cut issues.

Article about ethics in magicFor example, when you buy a magic trick, you are effectively buying the right to learn its secret and perform it. What you are not usually buying is the right to reveal that secret to anybody else.

It is generally considered not ethical to:

• make up your own version of a commercial magic trick without having first bought the original

• "steal" somebody else’s routine, presentation or patter without first asking for permission to use it

• copy somebody else’s Magic Video.

The issue of Ethics also applies, unfortunately, to some Magic Dealers (although not, I hope, to the ones listed on this site).

If you do see a Magic Dealer selling a "ripped off" item, you should really refuse to buy it, even if it might be cheaper than the original, and, if possible, you should contact the person who does own the rights to that item to let them know you might have spotted a "pirate" copy.

Some Magic Clubs, such as The Magic Circle, even have an Ethics Committee specifically created to address such matters.

Buying Magic - Some Things To Bear In Mind When You Buy Magic Tricks

At some point, you will end up buying magical items, whether that be tricks, books or videos, probably from Magic Dealers, so this page offers a few hints and tips to make sure that you buy wisely.

Hints and tips for buying magic tricks

Firstly, it is important to realise that, when you buy a magic trick, you are often paying for the secret. This is why some magic tricks seem expensive when you look at the props you receive. (This also touches on the subject of Ethics.).

Secondly, however much you like seeing a new magic trick demonstrated, do bear in mind, before you buy it, questions such as:

 • Does this effect suit my style and performing character, and if not, could I alter the presentation so that it does?

• Does it look like it could be performed in situations that would be appropriate to me (e.g. does the effect have to be performed at a table whereas you perform standing up)?

• Is it too similar to another trick that I already perform and, if so, should I stop performing the existing trick (since you shouldn’t perform too many tricks that are similar to each other in one routine or act)?

Thirdly, do consider buying some of the classic books on magic, since they will typically offer much better value in the long run than spending the equivalent money on one or two tricks.

Fourthly, when you do buy a magic trick, try to read the instructions with a view to understanding and learning how to perform the trick, but do try to ignore any presentation and patter that is supplied with the trick.

If you can provide your own presentation and patter, then you can be sure that nobody else will be performing that trick quite like you do.

Learn How To Do Magic Tricks By Watching How It’s Done

Have you ever wanted to be able to watch how to do magic tricks? Maybe you’re a magician who’s just getting started or perhaps you’ve been practicing for years. I’m going to show you how you can use the internet to watch magic tricks online.

Learn how to do magic tricksThere are many video sites out there on the internet. You have the likes of YouTube (now owned by Google Video), DailyMotion, MetaCafe, and so on - with so much to chose from it can be a little daunting for those who are just getting into the internet to know which to choose.

I’ll tell you my recommendation though: YouTube. This is without a doubt the best video site for watching how to do magic tricks. What you need to remember though is that there is a whole range of quality on the internet. Some videos are fantastic with excellent production, different camera angles that let you know exactly how the tricks are done, and others are downright rubbish. So, be careful which ones you watch and know that there are many different ways to do the same trick.

Not everyone will agree with the idea of learning magic through YouTube. Let me tell you why. What makes magic special is that you don’t know how it’s done. Having the video’s of how to do it means that anyone with enough motivation can find out exactly how tricks are done without having to even leave their house. However, in my opinion a lot of people don’t do this. All the information is right there at their fingertips but it takes too much effort to find it.

Remember that the people you see on YouTube and other video sites may well have been practicing for many years. Don’t be discouraged if even knowing the intricate little secrets you still can’t do it. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. If you keep it up and practice like you would any other skill (learning the guitar etc) believe me you will get the hang of it - just keep going.

Easy and Simple Card Tricks

Want to learn some of the easy and simple magic card tricks? Just go through this article.

Buy Easy Simple Card Tricks, Card Tricks For SaleBy using a pack of cards or two, you can perform many easy and simple magic card tricks. These card tricks are so easy and simple that they can be learnt and performed by anyone. Performing these simple card tricks doesn’t require any special skill. What they require is a regular pack of playing cards and a little bit of a practice.

So are you ready to learn and perform these easy and simple magic card tricks? So let’s go for it.

Easy Card Trick 1: Easy Pick

Ask your friend to pick up a card from the deck and memorize it. Shuffle the cards and ask him to place the picked card on the top of the deck.

Take the deck behind your back and flip the top card such that its face faces upwards. Bring the deck in front such that its bottom faces your friend. In the meanwhile, watch the flipped card, which now faces you.

Memorize the card and take the deck behind your back again. Flip the card and place it anywhere in the deck. Bring the deck in front and shuffle the cards. As you know the card you can easily point out the chosen card from the deck.

Easy Card Trick 2: Reds and Blacks

Separate the deck into two parts by the two colors such that one part has red colored cards and other has black colored cards. Place the separated decks on the flat surface.

Ask your friend to choose one card from each deck, memorize it, place it again but in opposite deck. Ask him to shuffle the decks separately. Take the decks in your hand and go through it. You can easily find out the cards as they have different color from rest of the cards that surround them.

Easy Card Trick 3: Vanishing Card

Show your friend a deck of cards present in its case. Remove the deck from the case leaving a card in it. Memorize its suit and number before placing it in the deck.

Ask your friend to remove five cards from the deck and place them facing downwards on a flat surface. Pick the card individually, call out their name and ask him to note down without showing the card to him. Along with the four cards call out the name of the card left out in the case instead of the fifth card. Now place all the cards in the deck and shuffle the cards.

Hand over the deck to your friend and ask him to go through it. He will found that that one card is missing. Tell him that the card has vanished from the deck and gone back to the case and show him the case. He will find the missing card there.

Easy Card Trick 4: Cutting to Aces

Remove the four aces from the deck secretly and place them on the top of the deck. Ask your friend to divide the deck into four equal piles by dropping cards off the bottom of the deck.

Keep a watch on the pile that has four aces. It may either on the left side or on the right side. Ask your friend to pick a non-ace pile and hold it in his hand. Ask him to take 3 cards from the top and place it at the bottom. Then ask him to take 3 cards from the top and place them individually on the top of each pile.

Ask him to repeat the procedure for next two non-ace piles. Lastly ask him to do carry out the same procedure for the pile that has aces. Finally ask him to turn over the top card from each pile, which will surely be the four aces.

Easy Card Trick 5: Hands off the Cards

This card trick is called Hands off the Cards as it can be performed without even handling the cards. Ask your friend to shuffle the cards and select any one card other than the picture card. You turn your back and ask him to place it on the top.

Ask him to remove the number of cards equal to the value of chosen card (if he chose five of hearts then he has to remove 5 cards) from the bottom and place it on the top. Now ask him to name the card one by one and place it on the table.

What you have to do is, just by ignoring the first card; go on counting the cards as one, two, three etc. When the number you are counting corresponds to the name of the card it’s generally the chosen card. But don’t stop him at that point. Let him name few next cards. After 2-3 cards stop him and name his card.

(Sometimes more than one card may correspond to your count. When this happens, call out any one of the cards and if it comes wrong call out the other one.)
