Stage fright
Before any performer in any area of entertainment steps on stage we all experience some kind of feeling that we don’t feel in other normal areas of our life, some people feel very excited, others feel nervous but they control it, others feel massive rushes of adrenalin raging through their veins, others report a feeling that they describe as an outer body experience.
Although some of these feelings may make you feel slightly uncomfortable for a short time they are all perfectly natural responses that your body feels is right for you in preparation for what you are about to do, but there is one other response that just the sound of its name can fill a performer with dread and ice cold fear, Stage fright.
Learn how to overcome stage fright
Just knowing of its existence has been enough to destroy some peoples careers as many years of performance with no stage fright ever is no guarantee that you are one of the lucky ones that has slipped through the net and will never experience it. Ex Beatle bassist Paul McCartney has spoken before about his dark times with it and American singer Barry Manilow has said in the past that quite often he is physically sick backstage just before his performance begins.
So why is it given this name? How can someone be afraid of a stage, after all a stage is just a raised platform made out of wood, why would we be afraid of some wood? The feelings of out of control anxiety must be caused by something else, it certainly is a fear but not of a stage, it is the fear of failure. This is a deep feeling that can cripple people and can stop people from achieving things in all areas of life, not just performance.
We feel that if we try something and we fail that people will laugh at us so rather than have to go through this humiliating experience we decide to not even attempt the thing in the first place because then we will be safe, we will be in our “comfort zone” whether your act consists of magic card tricks, mind reading, coin tricks or big illusions you may have felt feelings at one time or another of stage fright.
Symptoms include fast pulse, sweaty hands, dry mouth, shaky knees, tight throat, sickness, headache, stammering, speaking more and faster than usual, being totally silent, all of these are signs of stagefright, but if you feel any of the above have no fear, there are certain things that you can do to calm these negative thoughts and feelings and even eliminate them altogether.
All negative thoughts and feelings first start in the mind, therefore, if we learn to control our mind we will then have learned to control our body. Before you go on stage take some private quiet time out for yourself, sit really calm, relax and lower your shoulders so that you have no tension in your neck. Now close your eyes and visualize a picture of yourself walking on stage looking totally relaxed with the audience giving you the loudest round of applause that you have ever received.
Next, you perform your first trick and of course it is a faultless performance, once again you receive rapturous applause. Now you perform your next trick and so on all the way through to the end of your show.
These must not be just quick flickering thoughts, you must see in your mind the clearest images that you have ever visualised, see all the images in full colour, also, imagine what all your props feel like in every trick, hear all of the sounds you will hear during your act.
Although this is a calming exercise for you as you will not be able to think of anything going wrong, when you are concentrating on everything going right there is actually an even more powerful reason for doing this visualisation exercise.
What you are doing is running through a rehearsal of your show but in this rehearsal the whole show goes perfect, you are in effect, influencing the future to your advantage.
If the subject of creative visualisation is new to you you may find it difficult to concentrate on your images for the length of time that you would like in the early stages but with regular practice you will find that you begin to see your images for longer and longer periods of time, and remember, you can also go through the exercise at home in the chair, in bed, on the train, in fact anywhere that you have the chance to ‘go into the silence’ you can rehearse your act which is of course perfect everytime.
I have practiced creative visualisation for more than twenty five years now and I can tell you in total honesty that it works, this method of mind control is so powerful that you may well feel like a new person when you begin to practice it but I will give you some words of caution, you must be careful about concentrating on negative images as these scenarios will just as easily become reality.
If the subject of creative visualisation interests you there are endless books and dvd`s on sale on the internet, just search on ‘self improvement’.

Some of criss’ biggest illusions include walking on water, levitating above the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas, making a Lambourghini disappear, floating in between two buildings, being run over by a steam roller while laying on a bed of glass and cutting himself in half.
Criss Angel is the only magician ever to have won the prestigeous Merlin the Magician of the year award twice, in 2001 and 2004. Criss also has a tv show in the states called Chris Angel mindfreak in which he performs a mixture of magic, illusions, paranormal acts and street magic, it is one of the most successful shows in America and is about to go into series five.

Learn how to do tricks like David
Blaine is known as the master of street magic known mainly for his levitation and his throwing a card through a plateglass window trick, he is known as a man of mystery who rarely speaks and has even been known to sit through a whole tv interview without speaking a single word.
Although David Blaine was initially known by people for his slight of hand magic card tricks and pushing cigarettes through coins, along with other mind bending coin tricks he has become more famous recently for his body endurance stunts some of which include a stunt he named frozen in time.
On 27th of November 2000 Blaine stood encased in a solid block of ice in Times Square, New York, while he was inside the ice he was supplied with air and water through a tube that had been fed through the join in the ice blocks. When Blaine eventually emerged from the ice he had been in there for 63 hours 42 mins and 15 seconds, there were some initial concerns that Blaine may sustain some injuries during his removal from the ice blocks as they were cut open by the use of chainsaws but no such problems occurred.
On the 22nd May 2002 Blaine was lifted into the air by a crane which proceeded to lower him onto a pillar which was 100ft high but only 22 inches wide. Blaine stood on top of the pillar with no harness but he did have handles each side of him which he was allowed to hold on to in the event of freak strong winds which had to be considered as the location for this particular stunt was Bryant Park, New York City.
As it happens unusually harsh weather did arrive, storms and high gusting winds meant that a battered and freezing Blaine lasted a total of 35 hours on top of the pillar.
On 5th September 2003 another of Blaines stunts was to take place in London, England, where he would be suspended 30 feet in the air in a transparent box measuring 7 feet long by 3 feet wide and 7 feet high, during the 44 day stunt Blaine ate no food whatsoever and drank 4 litres of water per day.
On May 1st 2006 Blaine was placed into a water filled sphere measuring 8 feet in diameter for seven days and nights, again using tubes for nutrition, water and air. However during this stunt concern was shown by doctors as they found a breakdown in the skin structure of his feet and hands and more seriously the onset of liver failure.
When Blaine emerged from the tank with the help of emergency divers as he could not free himself, as he was also handcuffed, he was reported to be dazed and in a confused state and very disorientated and said to be mumbling over and over to the divers thank you . To this day by Blaines own admission he has to attend regular meetings with doctors to keep having his mental state assessed since his experience in the tank.
It has been reported that Blaine has said that he has no plans to ever attempt the water cylinder stunt again.

Buy Magic Tricks and Learn How They Do It
Most of us have already been fooled by someone playing a trick on us and its generally a bad experience when it happens to us. But there are other tricks that are funny and entertaining. It’s really fun being fooled watching magic tricks for instance.
The word trick can be good or bad depending on how you describe it. You can be tricked by your friend playing around with your girl or you can be tricked by an individual that somehow amazes you with the magic he performed.
Magic tricks are the type of tricks that most people loved to watch. A lot of viewers look amazed while others are curious how this guy performs such tricks without being caught out. Well, if you are the magician that is the thing that you should take care of.
Almost all magic tricks are hard to learn, knowing that you can be caught by someone if you haven’t performed it well. And in fairness to all magicians out there, you guys rock, fooling us with your magic tricks. But sad to say there are things that you can hide from us and to those people who are curious about this then its time to have at least a glimpse into how magicians prepare to fool us in front of our eyes.
In preparing for a magic show, before a magician enters and shows up to the crowd, he’s already set up his mind that what he will do will make us believe in magic. But prior to his performance, there are a series of practice steps needed to do to perfect a single trick that will last for about 5 to 10 minutes, but usually it can be done in a minute. Of course magicians need to create some suspense with his audience and create excitement for his viewers.
But above all the audience should be entertained and have a sense of surprise and amazement. The magicians should learn how to communicate with their audience and somehow make them involved in the show. This is where a good performance is being made. It doesn’t matter how hard or complicated the magic is, what is important is to put some excitement into the performance and surprise the audience with unexpected results but behind the performance is just a simple trick that if discovered it will spoil the suspense and fun.
Magic tricks are tricks that everyone will really love, and so the magician who performs to a big crowd started learning magic with simple tricks and learned more complicated tricks until mastering each of them and established a name in the field of magic.

Tips On How To Do Magic Tricks
I’m often asked what the best way to start to learn how to do magic tricks would be, and although it can be different from person to person, I’m sure I can provide a few hints and tips that may help and probably more importantly, – what you should try to avoid.
I think the most important thing to do when just starting to dabble in magic, is to learn a few simple magic tricks that can be done without having to use any gimmicked apparatus or special props. I mean magic tricks that can be done using ordinary items that can often be borrowed and handed out for examination after the miracle has been performed.
This can be really stunning for any lay audience, as they are so used to seeing magic tricks and illusions on TV and video, where fancy and often expensive props are used and also where camera tricks and clever editing are used to create a more exciting TV program.
I’m sure you’re well aware that most magic can be purchased from reputable magic suppliers and you’ll also know that the cost of most magical secrets is usually very high. (Often very expensive)
So how can you possibly learn how to do magic tricks without spending a great deal of money for these secrets and when most top magicians will just not explain how their magic tricks are done.
Most magicians first started to do magic tricks after receiving a small magic set, but unfortunately the typical magic set is usually made up totally of ‘self-working’ tricks, with trick cards and boxes etc., none of which can be examined by the audience after the trick has been shown, and so there’s the problem and worry of having to hide your tricks as soon as you finish each one.
For a beginner this creates a problem, especially among friends and classmates, who are always desperate to examine the magical props and try to find out ‘how it’s done’.
So that’s why I suggest learning some simple magic tricks with ordinary everyday objects that can often be borrowed and then freely handed out for examination. Ordinary everyday items like coins, pens, banknotes and such like, appear to be beyond any suspicion of trickery and doing magical things with them is so very effective and yet often very simple.
This really adds tremendously to the magic and of course, as most professional magicians will tell you, – ‘the simple effects are the ones that are usually the most stunning to the audience and in my experience, get the best response’.
Some of the best items to use to amaze your friends are coins, banknotes, pens, rope etc. and there are a few basic skills that are so easy to learn and will very quickly allow you to vanish and exchange coins and several small objects.
One of these basic skills is known as the ‘French Drop’, which is what all magicians use to vanish and exchange small items like coins, keys, balls etc. So I would certainly recommend that one of the first things that you should practice, as a beginner, is just that (French Drop) and coupled with the simple Palming of a coin.
This will allow you to carry out a nice magic routine with borrowed coins etc. and will leave you ‘Clean’ at the end of the effects. It will also get you out of difficulty when you are expected to do something magical.
This is magic that requires no props or fancy apparatus and there are now many great magical Websites where you can learn hosts of magic tricks for free.
In fact I set up my own Magic Website with the soul purpose of passing on my experience and knowledge to help all those eager would-be magicians to enjoy the sheer joy and pleasure of performing magic and entertaining others.
So in today’s digital Internet world you can get some amazing and exciting magic for free if you just search for and visit the right magic websites. – So go ahead and look around and welcome to the wonderful world of magic.

The Magic Circle – The Home of Magic
Surely the highest honour for which every magician strives is to become a member of The Magic Circle, but it is not as simple as just applying for your membership and paying your subscription.
![]()
The easy part is that you have to be over eighteen years of age, after that you have to have two existing members of the society (known as referees) put your name forward to the committee for consideration. You then have to perform a magic act in front of the committee which must show a required level of skill.
If you apply as a student of magic a lower level of skill will be accepted if you can show that you have the potential to take your art to the required standard with regular practice. After that a meeting will be held by the committee to decide on whether you will be accepted.
The Magic Circle was founded back in 1905 in London by a group of like minded gentlemen with a shared interest in magic, they all knew some magic but they couldn’t figure out how to do each others tricks so they agreed that they would show each other their tricks as long as what they learned was kept a secret, The Magic Circle was born.
Back then the society consisted of only about 23 members who met regularly in the upstairs room of a London pub called The Green Man.
Today The Magic Circle has members spanning the world in over forty different countries with magicians everywhere entertaining and baffling people with everything from card tricks and coin tricks to unbelievable illusions such as making the statue of liberty disappear, which by the way is an illusion I can perform myself but I am sorry to disappoint you that I am not about to break the code of The Magic Circle.
The Headquarters of The Magic Circle is in central London. In it you will find a museum, a dining room, a bar, a theatre, and a library with generously stocked book shelves.
The Magic Circle just like any other recognized organization has its own motto, “Indocilis privata loquin” which is Latin, and when roughly translated reads as “not apt to disclose secrets”. Members take the vow to honour this motto and to this day anyone breaking is instantly expelled from the society in shame.
If you are fortunate enough to be accepted into The Magic Circle you will have the honour of being able to place the letters MMC (member of the magic circle) after your name and if you wish to take things even further you may want to take advanced exams in the subject of magic.Successful applicants gain a degree in the subject which brings with it the reward of being able to place the letters MIMC (member of the inner magic circle) after their name.
I hope you make it into The Magic Circle one day, good luck and remember that constant regular practice will eventually get you to where you want to be, just like magic, and always keep looking for that next trick or it will vanish in a puff of smoke.
Check out our magic tricks that you can learn yourself.
